Big Inning propels Lions past 3rd tier Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Southeast Louisiana baseball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning Friday en route to defeating No. 3-ranked Arkansas, 7-3, at Baum-Walker Stadium in the George Cole Field.

Arkansas (5-3) scored first, collecting a run late in the third inning. Southeastern (5-5) chained three hits from Razorback starting pitcher Connor Noland in the top of the inning, but had nothing to show for it. Late in the inning, Razorback center fielder Zack Gregory scored a one-out double into the spread to right center and eventually scored on a two-out single from Cayden Wallace.

Noland struggled in the sixth. He hit SLU’s leadoff batter Evan Keller with a pitch to open the inning. After Tyler Finke retired on a bang-bang play at first base, Rhett Rosevear (RBI) and Preston Faulkner both chosen to kick Noland out of the game.

The Razorbacks brought in their closest, Kole Ramage, to snuff out the rally, but Bryce Grizzaffi greeted him with a right single. Ramage then issued back-to-back marches for Shea Thomas and Jacques Johnson (RBI), mixing in a wild tone.

Reliever Issac Bracken was not much more successful, hitting Christian Garcia with a pitch (RBI). With two outs, Bracken walked Keller to tackle another run. Finke hosted southpaw Zack Morris with a two-run single down the right field line to close the scoring.

starting throwing lion Will Kinzeler backed up the offensive explosion by throwing a scoreless sixth, retiring a batter and getting a ground fly on double play after issuing a walk.

Arkansas collected a pair of runs in the seventh, but the reliever Gage Trahan retired eight of the nine batters he faced to close the game.

Kinzeler (2-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work. He walked a pair and struck out five. Trahan earned his second save in as many games, striking out three in 2.2 scoreless relief innings. Noland (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings pitched.

Faulkner and Finke each had a pair of hits for the Lions.
