Duke defeats Carolina, 5-2, to open fall season

CHAPEL HILL – The Duke softball team opened its fall exhibition schedule with a 5-2 win over North Carolina Friday night in Chapel Hill. First-year student Cassidy curd was the winning pitcher and classmate Kairi Rodriguez was 3 for 3 at the plate.

  • Curd gave the Blue Devils three good innings with a pair of strikeouts to get credit for the win.
  • Junior Lillie Walker and freshman Sophie Garner MacKinnon each pitched two relief innings and each stoked two Tar Heels. Garner-MacKinnnon earned the stoppage.
  • Rodriguez had a 3-for-3 day at the plate to pace Duke’s offense.
  • Junior Kelly Torres struck.
  • Senior Kamryn Jackson was on base twice with a double and was hit by a pitch.
  • Duke and Carolina haven’t met in the regular season since the Blue Devils swept a four-game set against the Tar Heels in 2021.
  • The Blue Devils are coming off a 44-11 season in 2022 that ended with the program finishing first in the NCAA Super Regional.

  • Duke continues its fall schedule by hosting Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Duke Softball Stadium.
