HOOPS Exchange helps AVEVA establish the foundation of a 3D model for the digital twin platform

BEND, Ore., February 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Tech Soft 3D, the leading provider of engineering software development toolkits, today announces that AVEVA, a global leader in industrial software, is using HOOPS Exchange to deliver powerful multicad import to AVEVA E3D Design which allows customers to easily bring in data from multiple sources and enrich a common data model. This new functionality, powered by HOOPS Exchange, forms the basis of a sophisticated digital twin that customers can take advantage of during the asset lifecycle. The multicad import function also contributes to the digital transformation of companies with complex business processes. As part of its mission, AEVA assists clients in industries ranging from energy and utilities to oil and gas and shipbuilding in the design and engineering, operation and optimization of their factories and other important assets.

“HOOPS Exchange has been a fantastic way to increase the number of formats we support, and the results are something we simply couldn’t have achieved in a timely manner with our own development resources,” said Brian Hughes, Senior Product Manager, AVEVA. “Whether it’s a processing plant for an energy company or a brand new container ship, these are very large, complex and expensive assets that need to operate for many, many years, so you have to great care put into their initial design as well as their ongoing operation.”

AVEVA’s 3D design solution, AVEVA E3D Design, has a long history of helping customers design these assets. The product provides a common model that allows all designers and different disciplines to work together seamlessly on the project and identify and resolve conflicts before anything is built. The product also allows the integration of as-built laser scan data for retrofit or renovation projects, eliminating rework.

Increasingly, customers wanted to bring even more types of information into the AVEVA E3D Design environment and leverage the model beyond the design phase.

HOOPS Exchange has enabled AVEVA customers to create a richer, more detailed data model that forms the basis of a digital twin that can help optimize the performance of expensive assets over time.

“There’s been a lot more use of the model in recent years,” Hughes explained. “People realized that the engineering data created during the design phase is a useful resource that can be used to create a digital twin and optimize asset performance during the operation phase. Due to this change shift, our customers wanted us to allow them to bring together more types of data from different systems and vendors to create a more comprehensive model.”

While AVEVA offered support for approximately half a dozen computer-aided design (CAD) formats within AVEVA E3D Design, the company knew it needed to strengthen its product capabilities to better meet the market needs.

“Clients wanted to see more information and a higher level of detail than we traditionally offered in the AVEVA E3D Design model, but we didn’t have the in-house capability to add a lot of additional formats,” said said Hughes. “So we had to find another way to make that happen.”

More data creates a more powerful solution for customers

HOOPS Exchange was the perfect solution for AVEVA. The premier CAD translation software development kit, HOOPS Exchange provides access to more than $30 file formats through a single interface. Supported formats include CATIA, SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, Solid Edge and many more.

“HOOPS Exchange has been a fantastic way to increase the number of formats we support, and the results are something we simply couldn’t have achieved in a timely manner with our own development resources,” said Hughes. “Adding support for new formats and keeping up to date with the latest release of formats was something we really struggled to do at scale before. Moving that responsibility over to Tech Soft 3D allows us to really focus our development efforts.

By serving its customers better, AVEVA feels it has gained a powerful competitive advantage for its flagship product.

“The market told us it needed access to more data, and we were able to address that using some of the best software available on the market today,” Hughes said. “HOOPS Exchange has been a fabulous tool for us.”
